The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager

Scenario:

Be careful what you watch for . . .

Casey Fletcher, a recently widowed actress trying to escape a streak of bad press, has retreated to the peace and quiet of her family’s lake house in Vermont. Armed with a pair of binoculars and several bottles of bourbon, she passes the time watching Tom and Katherine Royce, the glamorous couple living in the house across the lake. They make for good viewing—a tech innovator, Tom is powerful; and a former model, Katherine is gorgeous.

One day on the lake, Casey saves Katherine from drowning, and the two strike up a budding friendship. But the more they get to know each other—and the longer Casey watches—it becomes clear that Katherine and Tom’s marriage isn’t as perfect as it appears. When Katherine suddenly vanishes, Casey immediately suspects Tom of foul play. What she doesn’t realize is that there’s more to the story than meets the eye—and that shocking secrets can lurk beneath the most placid of surfaces.

I really like Riley Sager’s books; however, this one was not one of my favorites. I am not sure why this one was difficult for me to finish (but I did finish it). There was a lot going on…plot…subplot…another plot…crazy stuff. Now, do I think you shouldn’t read this book? No. I still like Riley Sager’s books. I am just saying this isn’t my favorite.

Spoiler thoughts below….do not read past this point if you are going to read this book…

Seriously….

Stop reading…

Stop.

Ok. So… the evil spirit possession part is what really jacked up the book for me. It was just a little too much. At that point, I wasn’t sure if this was a murder mystery or horror story. It seems he was trying to do a little of everything. In all honesty, I really didn’t have it figured out even though I thought I did, so there are some twists and turns. Anyhoo…maybe you will like the book. Maybe you will not. Only you can tell….
