Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

If you have not read the book, then do not read this post. I am assuming if you came across this post then you are googling to see what others are saying about the book. So, you have been warned…

Yes, I am late reading this book. I remember when this book first came out, and everyone talking about it. I am one that actually chooses not to read a book when it is the “big thing” out there. Not sure why I am like that… Anyway, believe it or not, I have never even watched the movie. Saying all that… this is the second Gillian Flynn book I have read this past month. My student and I decided to try another one since this one was supposedly a popular one. We were thinking it had to be good. And just a little background information if you did not read my previous post on Sharp Objects… my student and I agreed that Sharp Objects was horrible, actually laughable. We both hated it and hated the fact she threw in inappropriate (sexual) scenes that were just childish and “forced” (as in, had nothing to do with the story but just thrown into the story). Saying that, we thought we would give this one a try.

MISTAKE!

Am I the only one who hates her books? First, she just randomly throws in sex/references to sex that are just immature and childish. Does she think it’s cool? Sells? What? Anyway, having one scene in a book that you can skip is one thing. She throws in this crap all the time. There is no way I would want my high schooler to read this (and that is usually how I judge a book). Second, the two main characters in the book are just troubled individuals. They have no remorse in any of their actions. Just nasty people. Third, trust me when I say there is no redemptive ending. The ending…just no!!!! Can you imagine the life of the child who has to grow up in that situation? Seriously, it is shy of child abuse to live in a house with these two people. Last, there is no way that someone can do what this lady did and get away with it. I just don’t find that possible.

If you have never read any of Gillian Flynn’s books, do yourself a favor and read Ruth Ware or Riley Sager instead. That’s all I have to say. Happy Reading!
