Anyone who has read my previous blog posts know that I am a huge “Freida” fan! I love her books and can breeze through them in no time (in other words, if you are traveling, make sure you have several of her books).
This book, Brain Damage, is definitely very different than her previous books I have read. Before discussing this book, you must know that McFadden is doctor who specializes in brain injuries. I am amazed that she is a practicing physician who writes incredible psychological thrillers. I digress… knowing her background helps you understand the basis for this book.
SYNOPSIS:
After years of hard work, Dr. Charly McKenna finally has it all. Prosperous career as a dermatologist? Check. Spacious apartment overlooking Central Park? Check. Handsome lawyer husband? Double check.
Then one night, a bullet rips through the right side of her skull and she loses everything.
As Charly struggles to recover from her brain injury, she begins to realize that the events of that fateful night are trapped in the damaged right side of her brain. Now she must put the jigsaw pieces together to discover the identity of the man who tried to kill her… before he finishes the job he started.
First, let me say, if you have never read any of McFadden’s books, DO NOT start with this one. This particular book is very different than her more recent books. I liked it, but it took me about half-way into the book to get really engrossed. Once you get there, it picks up and is good. What I really liked about this book, though, is not the psychological thriller aspect but her attempt to help people understand a person’s struggle recovering from a brain injury. It really helped me see the recovery (and frustration) through the eyes of someone who is dealing with a brain injury. Also, it helps you empathize with the caregiver of someone who is recovering from an injury (regardless of the injury). Now to her other novels…
An Ode to Freida (website)
I just realized that Freida had merchandise! You can probably guess what I will buy myself for Christmas! If you have never read any of her books, I would suggest reading Do Not Disturb first (if you are a “Hitchcock Psycho” lover. This one is by far my favorite. Next, read The Housemaid. The sequel, The Housemaid’s Secret, will be released in Feb. 2023! I have already pre-ordered the book. If you are interested in understanding the mind behind someone who desires to kill (like serial killers), you would enjoy The Perfect Son. In this book, you will not read graphic details or anything like that but a mother’s struggle of having a child that may have qualities of a killer.
I have read others but these are great ones to get you started! Remember, Brain Damage is a great book to read but do not read it if you have never read one of her other books (that is, if you are seeking a page-turner, psychological thriller). So…grab you a book and start reading! Happy Thanksgiving!
