Three book reviews: The Children on the Hill, The Housemaid, and The Locked Door

If you are wondering why I am a little behind in blogging, let’s just say finalizing the end of school and preparing for my NYC trip kept me busy.  Therefore, here is a review of my last three book (rather quick reads) and a picture of a great burger from Smashburger in NYC. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Book #1: The Children on the Hill by Jennifer McMahon

One of my favorite books is Frankenstein.  I know what you are saying…what?!?!?  I like Frankenstein for reasons that many may not consider.  The only one I will write about is this: I believe there are dangers in “crossing the ethical line” in science (not only ethical but morally wrong).

As I was reading this book, I couldn’t help but think of Frankenstein.  I later found out she wrote this book like Frankenstein but with a “twist.”  If you never liked Frankenstein, then possibly read this book and see if you then can relate.

I don’t want to say much but do want to say this… If you read this book and are interested in the primary issue in this book (not stating here because I don’t want to give away anything), google the U.S. Supreme Court case Buck v Bell.  You will be saddened to know about this time period in our nation’s history.

I really enjoyed this book.  I have read a previous book by McMahon and enjoyed it.  If you like suspense and mystery, then you will like this book.

Book #2: The Locked Door by Freida McFadden

Synopsis:

Some doors are locked for a reason….

While 11-year-old Nora Davis was up in her bedroom doing homework, she had no idea her father was killing women in the basement.

Until the day the police arrived at their front door.

Decades later, Nora’s father is spending his life behind bars, and Nora is a successful surgeon with a quiet, solitary existence. Nobody knows her father was a notorious serial killer. And she intends to keep it that way.

Then Nora discovers one of her young female patients has been murdered. In the same unique and horrific manner that her father used to kill his victims.
Somebody knows who Nora is. Somebody wants her to take the fall for this unthinkable crime. But she’s not a killer like her father. The police can’t pin anything on her.

As long as they don’t look in her basement.

This was a great, easy read.  Once you start, you are going to want to finish it quickly just to see how it ends.  If you like psychological thrillers, then you will like this book.

Book #3: The Housemaid by Freida McFadden

Yes, same author as the previous book.  No, I honestly did not know I literally bought another one of her books literally right after I read The Locked Door.  A friend said she loved The Housemaid. I was leaving for NYC the next day so needed to quickly buy a book.  Without even looking at who wrote the book, I bought the book.  It was only after I finished this book that I realized it was by the same author. ๐Ÿ˜‚

I really loved this book (even more than The Locked Door).  It only took a few days to read.  It has such an engaging plot that totally shocked me.  I thought how she wrote the book was very clever.  I think anyone needing a fun, simple summer read will love this book!!!!!

So, sorry the reviews for these three books aren’t long or great but hopefully you will find a summer book to read next. So…Happy Reading!
