The Moonlight Child by Karen McQuestion

Caprese salad  – made from homegrown tomatoes and basil… This really has nothing to do with the setting of the book.  However, we have a counter full of tomatoes so why not?

I have never heard of Karen McQuestion but, as you can guess, came across this book on the Amazon deals page.  Here is the synopsis:

A gripping and emotional novel that will leave you wondering about the neighbors next door…

On a cold January night, Sharon Lemke heads outside to see a lunar eclipse when she notices something odd at the house behind her backyard. Through her neighbor’s kitchen window, she sees what appears to be a little girl washing dishes late at night. But the Fleming family doesn’t have a child that age, and even if they did, why would she be doing housework at this late hour?

It would be easy for Sharon to just let this go, but when 18-year-old Niki, a former foster child, comes to live with Sharon, she notices suspicious activity at the Flemings’ house as well. When calling social services doesn’t result in swift action, the two decide to investigate on their own.

I didn’t know what to expect when I bought this book.  Yes, it has great reviews.  However, I learned a few years ago that “great reviews” on Amazon doesn’t mean much.  I have to say, though, I REALLY enjoyed this book.  It is a rather quick read and keeps you wondering how it all will end.  Sometimes, mystery books can be so predictable.  I couldn’t really see where this one was going until towards the end.  Without giving away spoilers, I originally felt it could be a little unrealistic until I reflected on some past events that made news headlines then realized how somewhat realistic this story could be (maybe not everything about the story but some aspects).  Anyway, if you like mysteries and suspense, try this book.  Happy Reading!

P.S. Here is a picture of a newly hatched baby chick!  The mama hen is dirty since she built (actually, stole) a nest made under where the chickens roost.  Yes…she stole the nest.  We had a broody duck hatch two ducklings (same coop).  Apparently, mama duck wasn’t finished hatching eggs so kept sitting on a nest with new eggs she confiscated.  One day, I heard a commotion to find the mama hen fighting with the mama duck for her nest.  I tried keeping mama hen off nest but to no avail.  Mama duck built a bigger nest (see picture) and stole some other duck eggs.  Mama hen is now happy and now hatching some of those eggs.  Mama Drama!
