The Last Thing He Told Me: A Novel

First things first… I sometimes forego a recipe when the setting is based in the U.S.; however, since I was already doing pulled pork, I thought I would share the best crockpot pulled pork recipe – featured in Taste of the South magazine years ago: link. I usually combine the seasonings the night before so all I have to do in the morning is throw it together.  I have made this recipe so often that I have basically memorized the ratios of seasonings.  Also, if you like tomatoes and cucumbers, forget about complicated recipes.  Just soak in Italian dressing and add a dash of salt and pepper!  Our meal was sort of a hodge-podge of stuff but love cooking what our garden produces!

Now for the book…

Synopsis: (Laura Dave’s website)

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.

As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.

Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they’re also building a new future—one neither of them could have anticipated.

With its breakneck pacing, dizzying plot twists, and evocative family drama, The Last Thing He Told Me is a riveting mystery, certain to shock you with its final, heartbreaking turn.

A friend told me about this book a few months ago.  I had forgotten about it until I was searching for another book to read.  I wasn’t sure what to think about it at first but it started to come together about half way into the book.  It doesn’t have a ton of bad language or explicit sex so how can you not like this book? I get so tired of reading trashy stuff, as if a novel can’t be good without filth.  Anyway, I really like this book! It is a quick read that keeps you guessing up until the end.  So…cook some pulled pork and pick up this book!  With a heat index of 105 where I live, what else is there to do but read and eat!  So…happy reading!
