Recipes for Love and Murder and Vetkoek

Recipes for Love and Murder by Sally Andrew and Vetkoek

Vetkoek is basically another type of fried bread but one unique to South Africa.  Many slice an opening into the bread and fill with curried ground meat. Some put jam or honey in it.  I did not use the author’s recipe in the back of the book.  I would say “I ain’t got time for that” but I actually DO have time for that thanks to Covid-19.  However, I do like using my bread machine so decided to google and find a bread machine vetkoek recipe.

This recipe was SO GOOD!  It sort of seems like a donut at first but it is a little thicker, heavier. I can see where, in the book, they would stuff these with curried ground meat and pack in a Tupperware to take with them to eat.  I would love to find different recipes to stuff these with (maybe create some).  I think it would be very good and filling for lunch. Below is a picture of mine with honey.

If you have read any of my previous posts, you may have seen a trend – buying books, not reading them, books collecting dust.  Well, this is another book that has been collecting dust. I have no clue how I came across it but thought it seemed interesting (you know, with recipes in the back of the book).  I think many would like this book, but I just didn’t love it.  I think it would be a “check out at your public library” type of book but not a “buy brand new” type of book.

So…here is my book analysis recipe: first, start out with some “Lifetime TV-MA;” second, add some “Hallmark” cheesiness;  third, balance it out with some “Murder She Wrote;” last, add a smidgen of “Silence of the Lambs.”

Maybe the lackluster can be blamed on my continuous watching of Midsomer Murders right now which are my kind of murder mysteries. It is a fairly quick read.  Also, you may get frustrated with the Afrikaan and South African terms used throughout her writing.  I chose not to refer to her glossary; I just sort of figured it out.  Anyhoo… totsiens (that is Afrikaan for “goodbye”).
