Out of curiosity, I searched to see if there happened to be a recipe for scones with a Swedish twist. I had no clue that there was actually a thing called Swedish scones. This is a great, easy recipe that anyone can do (especially if time is an issue). For us Southerners, this recipe is an equivalent of a biscuit. Actually, I think it is a biscuit. 😁

Looking at real estate isn’t usually a life-or-death situation, but an apartment open house becomes just that when a failed bank robber bursts in and takes a group of strangers hostage. The captives include a recently retired couple who relentlessly hunt down fixer-uppers to avoid the painful truth that they can’t fix their own marriage. There’s a wealthy bank director who has been too busy to care about anyone else and a young couple who are about to have their first child but can’t seem to agree on anything, from where they want to live to how they met in the first place. Add to the mix an eighty-seven-year-old woman who has lived long enough not to be afraid of someone waving a gun in her face, a flustered but still-ready-to-make-a-deal real estate agent, and a mystery man who has locked himself in the apartment’s only bathroom, and you’ve got the worst group of hostages in the world.
Each of them carries a lifetime of grievances, hurts, secrets, and passions that are ready to boil over. None of them is entirely who they appear to be. And all of them—the bank robber included—desperately crave some sort of rescue. As the authorities and the media surround the premises these reluctant allies will reveal surprising truths about themselves and set in motion a chain of events so unexpected that even they can hardly explain what happens next.
A year ago (I think about that time), I read Backman’s book A Man Called Ove. It was great! Loved it! I was going to read Anxious People shortly afterwards but chose not to at that time. Fast forward to a few weeks ago… I saw a student reading this book and wondered if it was any good. I decided to give it a try. Glad I did!
I love Backman’s writing style and character development, not to mention how he develops the plot through multiple perspectives. It is literally a page turner just because you are always trying to guess what was going on. What I liked about the plot development, though, is how he brings attention to a variety of issues (serious issues). It is as if he incorporated issues within issues, all while creating a plot. And although he probably didn’t plan to write the book from a biblical perspective (I have no clue so not saying he did or didn’t), the reader can definitely walk away knowing about God’s sovereignty…His omnipotence. Nothing ever happens in our lives that does not prepare us for another moment in our life – from the smallest act to the biggest. We are all part of “A” story, although we may never know it. Now, if I can only keep telling myself that after a rather rough past few weeks at school…
